VITEŽKA DVORANA ATTEMS- HALL OF KNIGHTS (SLO) (ENG)

GRAD IN VITEŽKA DVORANA  (SLO)

Attems in Viteška dvorana

CASTLE AND HALL OF ATTEM KNIGHTS  (ENG)

It is supposed that the castle was built in the 12th century on a small slope on the left bank of the Sava River, separating Styria and Carniola. It was built by the Salzburg people in order to serve administrative and defence purposes.

The town of Brežice, which was established in its neighbourhood, got city rights approved by a document in 1353. Name Brežice is a derivative from the town on the bank (bregu – brežcu), situated on the pier above the dried-out bed of the Sava.

The two-storey castle is the mightiest building in Brežice, built in the middle of the 16th century in the site of the castle which was burnt down in 1515, in time of the great peasant revolt.
There were about 80,000 rebels who demanded the reintroduction of the original feudal obligations and trade rights (the so-called "old rights"; Slovene: stara pravda) and a right to decide about the taxes.

The Attems the Knight's Hall

By the end of the 17th century and at the begining ofthe18th cetury  aristocratic family Attems turned the castle into a residence. The count Ignac Maria Attems was fond of the baroque art so famous Styrian artists of that time painted in his castles. His idea was to rebuild the eastern wing and make a hall, today known as Viteška dvorana (The Knight's Hall).

A double staircase, the chapel and the Knight's Hall are painted, the latter was renovated in 2011 and is the unique example of secular baroque frescoes on the Slovenian territory. It is the place where we can listen to concerts or attend other events while our thoughts travel through the scenes from Roman and Greek mythology.

Landscaped as a park with a fountain in the middle the castle courtyard looked very spacious. They took care of the castle's surroundings, filled up protective moats and turned them into garden plantations. The icehouse was built by the south-western tower. On the eastern side of the castle there was a cultivated park planted with various tree species.

IDRIJSKE KRNICE 1048M

          IDRIJSKE KRNICE VIEWPOINT

High above the Idrijca and Kanomljica valleys there is a picturesque and highly diverse plateau, neatly taken care of by its inhabitants, meadows and forests intertwining among the individual farms, spreading westwards from the 1,106 m high mountain Jelenk towards the villages Jagršče and Šebrelje.

The pristine natural environment is home to rich flora and numerous orderly and guest-friendly homesteads that will host you with a great offer of home prepared traditional culinary specialties.

Since 2001 a new and modern little church of the popular local patron Saint Florian has attracted visitors too. Its walls inside and outside beside the entrance have been decorated with magnificent mosaics depicting various sacral images, made by the worldwide known Jesuit artist Marko Rupnik SJ.

Values of farmland cultivation and life traditions have been preserved on this high plateau. Social life, neighbour to neighbour assistance and common events are very much alive in this village. Members of the local tourist association give the daily life an extra push, organising and managing many an event throughout the year, mainly at the venue in Cesar's Pancala.

OUTDOOR MUSEUM AND VIEWPOINT

In 2007 the outdoor museums and the most important remains and memorials of the Isonzo front in the Upper Soča region were interconnected into the Walk of Peace. It is dedicated to the memory of numerous victims of the First World War.

Trekking along the about 100 km long Walk of Peace, or only along a part of it, offers to every visitor an active rest in the wonderful, tranquil, unspoiled nature marked with the river Soča, the world of medium-high and high mountains, flocks of sheep and goats, and still active alpine pastures in summer, and the history of the First World War.

The walk starts at Log pod Mangartom at the entrance to the mine shaft named Štoln, and ends at the outdoor museum Mengore near Most na Soči. It is divided into five sections and trekking along each of them can be done in one day.

It runs past military cemeteries and chapels, Kluže Fortification, outdoor museums, the Koritnica gorge, the Soča gorge, the idyllic mountain alps, the Kozjak fall, two charnel houses, at Kobarid and Tolmin, a memorial church of the Holy Spirit on the Javorca plateau, the Tolminka gorge.
